Acrostic
A poem in which the beginning, middle, or last letters of each line form a word when read vertically
Alliteration
Repetition of the same consonant sound
Plosive
Alliteration of ‘p’ and ‘b’ sounds
Sibilance
Alliteration of ‘s’ and ‘sh’ and sometimes ‘f’ sounds
Dental
Alliteration of ‘d’ and ‘t’ sounds
Gutteral
Alliteration of ‘g’ , ‘r’ ,and ‘c’ sounds
Fricative
Alliteration of ‘f’, ‘ph’ , and ‘v’ sounds
Anadispolis
Repeating the last word or phrase in a line at the beginning of the next line
Anaphora
The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of multiple lines of verse
Assonance
Repetition of identical vowel sounds in order to achieve a particular effect (eg. Long vowel sounds can slow down a line)
Ballad
A simple song written as a narrative poem which tells a story through dialogue. Most commonly written in four-line verse with a regular rhythm
Blank verse
Poetry written in non-rhyming, ten syllable lines
Caesura
A stop or pause in a line of poetry - usually created by punctuation
Couplet
A two-line stanza
Diction
A choice of words or language used
Dramatic Monologue
A poem in which an imagined speaker addresses the reader
Elegy
A slow, thoughtful poem written for someone who has died
End stopped lines
A line of poetry with a pause or stop at the end
Enjambment
A running over of the sense and grammatical structure from one line to another , or between stanzas. There is no punctuation at the end of a line
Epigraph
A quotation from another text, included in a poem
Form
How a poem is structured or organised
Free Verse
Poetry written with lines of irregular verse and often without rhyme
Hyperbole
A figure of speech which uses exaggeration to emphasise a point
Iambic Pentameter
Iambic means the second of each two syllables is stressed. Pentameter means 10 syllables (5 iambs)
