Allegory
An extended metaphor in which the characters, places and objects in a narrative carry figurative meaning.
Allusion
An intentional reference to a fictional or non fictional, person, place, event or story
Anadiplosis
The repetition in the last word in a clause or sentence at the beginning of the next
Anaphora
The repetition of a word or words at the beginning of successive lines or sentences
Anthropomorphism
A form of personification; given to gods, animals, objects or concepts
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds without repeating consonants; sometimes called vowel rhyme

Asyndeton
The omission of a conjunction between parts of a sentence; I came, I saw, I conquered
Blank verse
Unrhyming iambic pentameter, also called heroic verse. The traditional way to read poetry
Caesura
A stop or pause in a metrical line, often marked by punctuation
Chremamorphism
Giving charactersitics of an object to a person
Dramatic monologue
A poem where the speaker addresses a silent listener, often not the reader
Eclogue
A brief, dramatic poem, set in an idyllic rural place but discussing urban, legal, political or social issues
End-stopped
A metrical line ending at a grammatical boundary break; a dash or ending parenthesis or punctuation like a colon or full stop
Emjambment
The running over of a sentence from one line to the next without terminal punctuation
Free verse
Nonmetrical, nonrhyming lines that closely follow the natural rhythm of speech
Fricative
A consonant sound such as f or v
Imagery
Elements of a poem that invoke any of the five sentences
Litotes
A deliberately understatement for effect
Motif
A central or recurring image or action in a literary work
Onomatopoeia
When a world’s pronunciation replicates it’s meaning
Oxymoron
A figure of speech which brings together contradictory words for effecr
Panygyric
A poem to give effusive praise.
Persona
The speaker of the poem
