Poetic Voice
The way in which a poet’s sense of identity is projected through language choices
Speaker
The ‘I’ of the poem, sometimes synonymous with ‘narrator’
Connotation
The array of emotions and ideas suggested by a word
Denotation
The literal meaning of the word
Form
The shape of configuration of a word
Rhyme
The repetition of identical or similar sounds, usually at the end of poetic lines
Metre
The regular rhythmic pattern seen and heard in verse
Feet/foot
The basic unit for describing metre; combination of stressed and unstressed syllables
Iamb
A two-syllable foot, unstressed followed by stressed e.g beHOLD
Trochee
A two syllable foot, stressed followed by unstressed e.g APple
Pentameter
Five-foot line
Tetrameter
Four-foot line
Trimeter
Three-foot line
Caesura
A pause or break occurring within a metrical line
Enjambment
When the syntax of a phrase carries over across a line break
End-stopping
Lines in which the sense of a phrase fits with its line length
Masculine lines
Individual examples that end with a stressed syllable
Feminine lines
Individual examples that end with an unstressed syllable
Free verse
Poetry arranged according to content and rhetoric, and not by rules of rhyme or metre
Volta
A turn or moment of shift within a poem
Lineation
The arrangement of lines, including their length, structure, and organisation within a poem
Heterometric
A form or stucture where the lines have varying lengths or meters
Isometric
A form where the lines have equal or similar lengths and follow a consistent metre
Versification
The art or practise of composing verses or the arrangement of words into metrical lines
