Alliteration
Repetition of similar consonant sounds ex. Lovely lion

Repetition of consonant sounds in middle or end of several words

Repetition
Repeating of same word/phrase
Refrain
When a word/group of words is repeated regularly
Ex. Jump back honey, jump back
Euphony
Combination of pleasant agreeable sounds
Ex. I hear a silent whistle of a bird swooshing through
Cacophony
Combination of harsh, clashing sounds, same as dissonance
Ex. The car cracked and screeched to a impeding halt
Onomatopoeia
Use of a word who’s sound suggests it’s meaning
Ex. Click, jingle, screech, drumming
Metaphor
Figure of speech that makes a comparison between 2 things that are basically dissimilar
Ex. My dad has a heart of gold
Extended metaphor
Metaphor is extending throughout entire poem
Simile
A comparison made using “like” or “as”
Ex. Shes pretty like a flower
Personification
Figure of speech in which something non-human is given human qualities
Ex. The sun kissed me
Apostrophe
A figure of speech in which an inanimate object is addressed directly
Rhyme scheme
Ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of lines of a poem/verse
Ex. I have a pet dog,
Although I think he’s a frog
Hyperbole
Figure of speech using exaggeration or overstatement for a desired effect
Ex. He’s running faster than the wind
Sonnet
14 line poem, usually Shakespearean or Italian
Allusion
Reference to a person, place or event that writer expects reader to know about
Ex. His heart was 2 sizes too small
Couplet
2 consecutive lines of rhymed poetry
Ex. She was a little tense
The letter made no sense
Free verse
Verse written with no recognizable rhyme scheme
Lyric poem
Poem that expresses a speakers personal thoughts/feelings
Rhetorical devices
Devices used in poetry that appeal to the ear, used to create effect based on how they sound
Figurative devices
Pleasing to ear like rhetorical devices, but are more engaging to the mind
Colloquialism
Informal speech
Ex. Dawg, bro
Oxymoron
Figure of speech that combines opposites or contradictory ideas/terms
Ex. Alone together
