Allusion
a reference of an outside fact, event, or other source
ballad
a fairly short narrative poem written in a songlike stanza form
Blank verse

caesura
a speech pause occuring within a line.
Concrete poetry
an experimental form of poetry that is intended to combine visual and aural elements of art and music in poetic form.
connotation
What a word suggests beyond its basic definition; a word’s overtones of meaning.
The word ‘’ home’’ by denotation means only a place where one lives, but by connotation it suggests security, love, comfort, and family.
continuous form
That form of poem in which the line follow each other without formal grouping.
The only breaks being dictated by units of meaning.
couplet ( poetry )
two successive lines, usually in the same metter, linke by rhyme.
Denotation ( L.A ) or ( french )
the basic definition or dictionary meaning of a word.
didactic poetry ( religion )
poetry having as a primary purpose to teach or preach
dramatic monologue ( drama or speech )
a poem in which a situation at a critical moment is presented a narrator addressing a silent audience.
Dramatic situation ( debate )
the circumstances of the speaker.
elegy ( religion )
a poem of lament, meditating on the death of an individual.
end rhyme
rhyme that occurs at the end of lines
end-stopped line
a line that ends with a natural speech pause, usually marked punctuation.
enjambement ( drama )
a run-on-line, continuing into the next without a grammatical break.
english or shakespearean sonnet
a sonnet rhyming ababcdcdefefgg.
epic
a long, dignified narrative which gives the account of a hero important to his nation or race.
epigram
a short poem which is often witty
epitaph
a serious or humorous poem or statement on a grave stone commemorating the deceased.
extended figure
a figure of speech( usually metaphor, simile, personification or apostrophe)
fixed form
any form of poem in which the length and pattern are prescribed by previous usage and tradition.
Folk ballad
poem to sing, anonymous author, transmitted orally for years or generations before being written down.
