Speaker
The narrative voice of the poem (not necessarily the poet)
Tone
The speaker’s attitude towards the subject matter.
Conceit
An extended metaphor that applies multiple characteristics of an object or something else
Allusion
A brief reference to an event or person from history, literature, or popular culture, which is meant to activate background knowledge.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect
Perfect Rhyme
An exact match of sounds.
Near Rhyme
A close but not exact match of sounds- usually the final consonants are similar but not the same
End Rhyme
Rhyme that falls at the end of two or more lines in a poem (not necessarily together)
Internal Ryhme
A rhyming pair falls within the Same line of poetry
Couplet
Two consecutive lines that rhyme, usually with the same meter.
Alliteration
Repetition of initial consonant sounds
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds
Eye Rhyme
Spelling of paired words appear to rhyme, but the sounds don’t
Stanza
A structural part or section of a poem.
Onomatopoeia
The use of words that sound like what they mean
