Stanza
The repetition of similar sounds at the end of a word.
Rhyme
The pattern of end rhyme in a poem.
Rhyme scheme
A sound element of poetry, it is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.
Rhythm
A repeated pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.
Meter
A pair of rhyming lines in a poem.
Couplet
A four-line poem or stanza usually united by meter rhythm.
Quatrain
The deliberate use and arrangement of words to create a special effect.
Figurative language
A comparison of two words that have a quality in common using like or as.
Simile
A comparison of two things that have a quality in common not using like or as.
Metaphor
A metaphor that is developed over several lines of writing or over the course of an entire poem.
Extended metaphor
The use of a person place or object to stand for something.
Symbolism
The repetition of consonant sounds.
Alliteration
The repetition of a consonant sound in several words of a line.
Consonance
The repetition of a vowel sound in several words of a line or stanza.
Assonance
A five line poem that is often humorous. It has a regular meter and an aabba rhyme scheme.
Limerick
A 14 line rhyming poem written in iambic pentameter.
Sonnet
A meter in which each unstressed is followed by a stressed syllable.
Iambic pentameter
Unrhymed iambic pentameter.
Blank verse
Poetry that does not follow a regular pattern or rhyme.
Free verse
Poetry that tells stories
Narrative poetry
A long narrative poem that tells of the adventures of a hero of historic or legendary importance.
Epic
A narrative poem that usually tells a story with tragic overtones.
Ballad
Poetry that focuses on the emotions or thoughts of a single speaker.
