Stanza
The repetition of similar sounds at the end of a word.
Rhyme
The pattern of end rhyme in a poem.
Rhyme scheme
A sound element of poetry, it is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.
Rhythm
A repeated pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.
Meter
A pair of of rhyming lines in a poem.
Couplet
A four line poem or stanza, usually untied by meter and rhyme.
Quatrain
The deliberate use and arrangement of words to create a special effect.
Figurative language
Comparison of two things with the words “like” or “as”
Simile
A comparison of two things that have a quality in common. Not using like or as
Metaphor
A metaphor that is developed over several lines of writing or over the course of a poem.
Extended metaphor
The use of a person, place, or object to stand for something besides itself.
Symbolism
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
Alliteration
The repetition of a consonant sound in several words of a line or stanza.
Consonance
The repetition of a vowel sounds in several words of a line or stanza.
Assonance
A five line poem that is often humorous.
Limerick
14 line rhyming poem written in iambic pentameter.
Sonnet
A meter In which each unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed syllable.
Iambic pentameter
Unrhymed iambic pentameter.
Blank verse
Poetry that does not follow a regular pattern or rhythm or rhyme.
Free verse
Poetry that tells stories.
Narrative poetry
A long narrative poem that tells an adventure.
Epic
Narrative poem that tells a story about a tragic overtones.
Ballad
Poetry that focuses on the emotions or thoughts of a single speaker.
