What is a stanza?
An identical or similar section of a poem that is repetitive in rhyme and pattern
Example: “In what distant deeps or skies. Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand, dare seize the fire?” - William Blake “The Tyger”
What is onomatopoeia?
Mimicking or recreating sounds in a word form
Examples: “Buzz”, “Meow”
What is a simile?
Using the words ‘like’, ‘as’, and ‘though’ as comparative words between two things that are not similar
Examples: ‘As Blind as a Bat’, ‘As Clear as a Crystal’
What is rhyme?
A similarity or match in the final one or two words in a stanza
Examples: ‘Glass - Mass’, ‘Cook - Book’
What is a metaphor?
A comparison between two unlike things that don’t use the words ‘as’ or ‘like’
Examples: ‘The Classroom was a Zoo.’, ‘Her Hair was a Golden River.’
What is alliteration?
The action of using words that have the same first letter consecutively
Examples: ‘And the Furrow Followed Free’, ‘The Fair Breeze Blew’
What is rhythm?
An accent or stress in a word repeating
Example: ‘This Rat is Fat’, ‘Nina Liked the Ball in a Mall’
What is assonance?
A vowel that is similar to another vowel repeating in a piece of poetry or sentence
Examples: ‘Go With The Flow’, ‘I Like To Ride My Bike’
What is hyperbole?
The amplification/exaggeration of a word or situation
Examples: ‘He has the memory of an elephant’, ‘He’s as strong as an ox’
What is personification?
Giving a non-living thing living or human attributes
Examples: ‘The cold slapped me in the face’, ‘Fear stalked the village that night as they awaited the coming storm.’
