POLAR REGION Flashcards
(44 cards)
What is the definition of Polar Region
anywhere north of 78 N Latitude
usually used for china, India, Korea
What are additional considerations for Polar Regions
Fuel Freeze Temps Polar Safety Suits Solar Activity and Apace Weather True Heading Ref Communications Diversions Considerations
When do we get a [ ] LOW FUEL TEMPERATURE
-37 DEG
How long does it take to change the fuel temp
15-60 min to change by 3 deg
How does Dispatch predict the fuel temperatures
FTPP fuel temperature prediction program
developed by Boeing to predict the coldest temp the fuel will reach
What is the requirement for Polar Suits
2 required for flights in the Polar region
Why is solar activity increased at the poles
because the poles have a shallower atmosphere and earths magnetic flux lines
What is the source of the electromagnetic radiation
solar flares
flights above 70 N
which can cause HF blackouts and GPS issues
FOM 8.18.11
What is the Geometric scale for solar weather
G5 Extreme G4 Severe G3 Strong G2 Moderate G1 minor
What level of G are restrictions placed on the flight
G3
>G3 flight will be planned south of 78 N due to possible navigation errors
When must Crews switch to TRUE heading reference
NCA - northern control area
ACA - Artic control area
70 N
operating on an airway that is charted only in true
What is SATCOM’s limit North
82 N
due to lack of satellite coverage
Crews should be prepared for temporary communications black out once north of 82 N, but if com is lost how do we communicate
Air to air 121.5 or 123.45
Maintain route and altitude according to last received and acknowledged
If a contingency procedure is required, proceed according to ATC clearance not available
In preparation for the black out what does ATC do
ACARS message at 75 N
HF Freq
Space WX
Altn Info
What are the considerations for a diversion
company needs to recover any diversion within a certain time frame
coordinate with dispatch
What is unique about Polar ops airspace
Shared by 6 different FIR’s
Edmonton Anchorage Artic Magada Oceanic (russia) Murmansk Oceanic (russia) Bodo (Norway) Reykjavik
Which Polar IFR’s Require a oceanic clearance
all but Anchorage and Edmonton
Transiting the Reykjavik or Bodo FIR’s will require a North Altlanic oceanic clearance. What notice do you have to give?
from Edmonton 45-15 min prior to entry
from Murmansk 30-15 min
(see Ref notes on Jepp)
What is the annomoly with Russian Airspace
clearance from North Atlantic FIR will include the Russian oceanic clearance,
BUT a Clearance obtained form Russian FIR will not include north Atlantic clearance
If you had a mix of Jet A and Jet A1 with a fuel freeze of -43 deg could you reset the annunciation temp from -37?
No not until cruise.
Where can we get a list of ETOPS Alternates
Jepessen Airway Manual
AC tabs
ETOPS Adequate airports
Murmansk Oceanic (russia) require HF position reports what is the call
“Murmansk Oceanic, Air Canada 061, position DEMAK at 1138Z, next position ANODI at 1325Z then MARUL”
Oceanic/Remote Procedures table on QRHN will still be used but what is the difference
the order
ETOPS is entered before oceanic at Reykjavik
ETOPS will be Exited after exiting the oceanic airspace
When is SLOP used?
Rejkjavik not in russia
FOM 9.1.13
