Q

Post-modernists - Agree

A

E - Beck argues today family roles and relationships reflect a great individualism that results in less stability (risk society).
E - Today they are many policies that allow greater tolerance for flexible working hours, to fit around family life, joint paternity leave etc. e.g. Shared Parental Leave (2015) parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay after the birth/adoption of their child.
E - Marxists - Donzelot claim social policy reinforces capitalist ideology. e.g. Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018) are seen as a way to regulate children, according to RC ideas of what is appropriate or hegemony. (Gramsci)

Q

Feminists - Disagree

A

E - Barrett & Mackintosh argue police reflects wider patriarchal ideology assuming women take role of housewife and carer. Tax relief still exists to encourage traditional marriages where the women stays at home. Child Benefit also is still paid to mother unless challenged.
E - This austerity cut in benefits affected women most negatively and reinforced their marginal position in economy.
E - Late modernists - Giddens - claims relationships affect the fact people live in ‘pure relationships’ and have ‘confluent love’ meaning people only stay in relationships if they are fun and fulfilling. e.g. 2014 Psychological Abuse Act - changing nature of divorce.
