What are the policy objectives of plagiarism?

A
  1. Plagiarism must be clearly defined so that ufh operates on the basis of a similar understanding problem.
  2. The policy encourages faculties and departments to commit themselves to educate all students thoroughly about the nature of plagiarism, as well as conventions that apply to researching and presenting academic material in their respective disciplines.
  3. The policy provides the use of plagiarism detection producers to assist academics in both detecting and preventing incidences of plagiarism.
  4. It’s puts in place various producers for dealing with students who commit plagiarism.

P in academic, uni context, may be defined as taking and using ideas, writings,works or inventions of another, from any textual or internet-based source, as if they were one’s own

Aspects of plagiarism

A
  1. Using direct words of another w/o quotation marks( even if the passage is reference)
  2. The unacknowledged copying of a sentence or 2 of text, copying more extensive blocks of text.
  3. The syndication of a single piece of work by more that 1 student( unless legitimate group work)
  4. The borrowing and Using another person assign (w or w/o their knowledge and permission)
  5. Stealing an entire essay from another person or from the internet on infringing copyright.

Purpose of this policy?

A

The intention,negligence or innocence of a person is not relevant to the finding as to whether plagiarism, as a fact, has occurred. However, the state of mind of the person will be highly significant in determining how to deal with the case as far as taking remedial action or imposing a penalty is concerned.

  1. Any administrative act must be lawful,reasonable and procedurally fair.
  2. More specific where an allegation of plagiarism is made against a person, the person mist be offered an opportunity to see and hear evidence against him/her and to state his or her case to an independent and impartial tribunal, before a decision is made.

  2. It should periodically review the content and implementation of this policy.
  3. In addition, it pr a subcommittee thereof, acts as a senate plagiarism adjudicate.
  4. The chairperson will have the power to set aside any activity or penalty which has been taken or imposed relating to plagiarism thar does not conform to the procedures laid down.l

Responsibility of departments or schools in educating students about p

A
  1. Departments need to acknowledge the importance of their own role in student’s acquisition of academic discourse and are responsible for taking active steps to provide students with an explanation as to why,as well as how, sources may be used and cited in building academic knowledge.
  2. Individual Departments are responsible for ensuring that students fully understand the nature of legitimate academic practice, of what constitutes a illegitimate practice, and the potential consequences of such conduct, in that particular discipline.

What does the department have to ensure

A
  1. All study guides include general info about p ref to the uni policy on p and states that p is considered to be a serious academic transgression
  2. Study guides should outline that material from internet, other students, books, articles may not be used in assignment
  3. They must train or tutor students
  4. P teaching program must not only be available to 1st year level but must be reinforced at 2nd 3rd and also postgraduate level
  5. In appropriate cases p is dealt with sensitivity and means of counseling for and educating, rather than simply by imposing sanctions.
  6. Penalties and loss of marks should be in accordance with the policy and fair
  7. Students should include declaration form at end of assessment to state thar their work is their own

A

Staff members should always be on the lookout for cases of plagiarism where applicable and must deal with it in a appropriate manner using the policy.

Category A

A

First time, minor infringements,usually handled by staff members who detected the offense.
Circumstances in which assessor is student tutor,demonstrator,it’s the opportunity the lecturer of coordinator of that course to deal with it and provide authority.
New university students, if committed p because of lack of understanding of what is required, can be counseled by staff member. In some cases a mark penalty could be imposed. If imposed staff members need to indicate penalty and reasons.
If students wishes to appeal if they feel they have be wrongly charged can appeal to HOD. HOD will then check. If it happens to true that student will have even more penalty

A

Repeatedly minor offenses at a more senior level academic level than first year. More penalties will not be bigger than semester mark.
If stuff member is unsure of plagiarism they should contact head of department (HOD)
