authority
not merely to have power over someone. to have power of someone is to have at ones disposal the means to make that person do something. Authority requires something more: person subject to the authority have a certain pro attitude towards the person or institution that claims authority. authoritative directives are obeyed not because those who obey them are fearful of punishment but because those who obey them believe that the directives should be obeyed by virtue of their issuing from authority.
consent (contract) theory
should obey law because we have consented to do so. voluntarism voluntarily undertaking of our part (plato). each of us can impose on ourselves an obligation to obey the law. have consent to obey the law (debate) convening to obey the law- uncontroversed
consent
duty to of a particular thing, permits another person to do a particular thing, whole range of contexts
express (active) consent
expressly annonce speech or writing that we consent to do something
tacit consent
subtle forms of consent, no express announcement is made
