insulted the Scottish by delaying his coronation in scot till 1633, carried out by Arminian bishops, the altar was raised and railed off _decorated with candles and crusific (catholic). he swore coronation oath, promising to defend the bishops and privileges of church

Scottish reactions to laudiansism/refroms 1637

A

riots broke out in edinburg, followed by Glasgow, the prayer book riots resistance grew and presbyterians and synods dissent against prayer book. so in 1635 c.1 issues royal proclamation make any action fo opp to prayer book an act of treason

the national covenant

A

drawn up by prominent members of Scots parliemnt signed by hundreds of throusands of Scots. they pledged loyalty to the king but aimed to defend church in scot agsint his refroms (resit innovations to religious practises and abolish bishops)

infurated by resistance of Scottish covenanters > he begun to concede a military engagement, so brought time by calling a general assembly of Scottish Kirk(prominently abolished bishops and prayer book) so gave time to summon English noble to York provide military assistance
