Q

What is proportional voting?

A

Voters choose parties or candidates. Each party needs a certain number of votes (a quota) to win a seat. Seats are given based on how many quotas a party reaches. Extra votes (surplus) from winning parties and preferences from other candidates help fill remaining setas. This way, the number of seats a party gets matches the percentage of votes they recieve

Q

What is preferential voting?

A

Voters number the candidates in order. If a candidates gets more than 50% of the first preference votes, they win. If no one gets 50%, the candidate with the fewest votes is removed. Their votes are given to the next preferred candidate on those ballots. This continues until one candidate has over 50% and is declared the winner.
