pollution Flashcards
(13 cards)
Arsenic
Arsenic is found in the Earth’s crust, which gets dissolved and finds its way into groundwater due to fracking. When taken in it can become carcinogenic (liver, kidney, or lung cancer)
Point source pollution
Pollution released through a pipe, easier to monitor to prevent
Nonpoint source pollution
Pollution from multiple unidentifiable sources
Eutrophication
Eutrophication is when humans cause excess nutrients to be released into water which feed enormous algae blooms. These block the sun and kill marine plants, and bacteria feast on the dead plants and cause hypoxic dead zones.
lead
When lead pipes start to corrode, lead from those pipes get into drinking water, which can cause damage to your kidneys and brain.
Mercury
Mercury causes neurological and developmental damage to fish exposed as well as consumers of those fish. The largest sources of mercury pollution are coal burning, and mining
Pesticides
Pesticides are improperly disposed of and can get into water sources, causing aquatic life to die and give humans diseases.
Pharmaceuticals
Industrial compounds
(including oil)
Pharmaceutical pollution can increase antibacterial resistance and disrupt the hormonal balance of surrounding wildlife. it also allows for bacteria to generate antibodies, making it harder to keep their population under control
Particulate matter
Particulate matter can irritate the respiratory system.
ozone
Ozone is helpful in the stratosphere and works to reflect some of the sun’s radiation. However when it’s trapped at ground level it’s harmful because humans can’t breathe it.
smog
Smog is a fog or haze that is combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants that can cause respiratory diseases.
VOC’s
VOCs are the gas form of certain chemicals and can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, damage to the nervous system, and even cancer.
Asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that, when disturbed, releases microscopic fibers into the air which can be inhaled and cause serious health issues like lung cancer.
