What is it?

A

Inflammatory condition in elderly women

A

GCA

What is the typical presentation?

A

70 y/o woman presents with sudden onset of severe shoulder pain and pelvic girdle that is worse in the morning. She can’t get out of her chair.

Why can’t the patient get out of a chair?

A

PMR causes proximal muscle weakness

Systemic symptoms?

A
Malaise
Anaemia
Fever
Weight loss
Depression

Investigations?

A

Bloods

What is diagnostic on blood findings?

A

ESR >50

What is diagnostic treatment wise?

A

If they get better on steroids it was PMR not MM

1st line treatment?

A

Prednisolone w/ bone prophylaxis

What should happen to the ESR with prednisolone treatment?

A

Should normalise in 4 weeks

2nd line treatment?

A

Methotrexate

Tocilizumab
