What is Haloperidol?

A
  • First Generation (Typical) Antipsychotic medication
  • Indication (Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective disorder, Acute Delirium, Bipolar, Restlessness and Confusion)
  • Side Effects: Hypotension, Arrhythmias, dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, QT interval prolongation, movement disorders, muscle rigidity, hyperglycaemia, urinary retention
  • Impact on Falls:
  • Interactions: Quinidine, Buspirone, Fluoxetine (increases the plasma Haloperidol) Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital, Rifampicin (decreases the plasma Haloperidol)

What is Macrogol?

A
  • Osmotic Laxatives
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Side effects: GI discomfort, Nausea + Vomiting, dehydration, dizziness, hypothyroidism, hypoglycaemia
  • Impact on Falls: Frequent/ urgent trips to the toilet
  • Interactions: Epilepsy medications (Levetiracetam or Phenytoin)

What is Adcal D3?

A
  • Consists of Calcium Carbonate and Colecalciferol
  • Prevention and Treatment of Vit D and Calcium deficiency
  • Side effects: Constipation, bloating, Nausea and Vomiting, Mood changes and bone/ muscle pain
  • Interactions: Avoid certain foods that are high in oxalic acid (spinach, rhubarb), phosphate (bran) and phytic acid (whole cereals) - reduces absorption of calcium

  • Bone resorption inhibitors
  • Osteoporosis
  • Side effects: constipation, consciousness impaired, dizziness, memory loss, insomnia, MI, vertigo, Nausea
  • Interactions: can cause a decrease in the absorption of Trovafloxacin
