What is a syllogism?
Where ONE conclusion is justified by TWO other premises.
What is a Disjunctive Syllogism?
A syllogism that has a DISJUNCTION (making a choice between two things).
Provide an example of a Disjunctive Syllogism.
Either you do your homework or you get punished by your teacher. Since you don’t want to get punished by your teacher, you should do your homework.
What is a Categorical Syllogism?
A syllogism that involves categories of things.
Give an example of a Categorical Syllogism.
All cats are mammals, and all mammals give birth to their young, hence all cats give birth to their young.
What is the structure of a Categorical Syllogism?
All As are Bs, All Bs are Cs, therefore All As are Cs.
What is a Hypothetical Syllogism?
A syllogism involving ‘if…then’ (conditional statements).
What does Modus Ponens state?
If A then B. A happened. So B happened.
Provide an example of Modus Ponens.
If she misses the bus, she will be locked by the prefect. Since she has missed the bus, she will be locked by the prefect.
What does Modus Tollens state?
If A then B. B is not true, so A is not true.
Provide an example of Modus Tollens.
If she passes the audition, then she will be admitted into the CCA. She was not admitted into the CCA, so she did not pass the audition.
