What are the important quotations from poppies?
- “this is wear it has led me”
- “sellotaped bandage”
Analyse : “this is wear it has led me”
- Vague Pronoun, contains double meaning, this as in the location but also the situation, suggests that this is her sons death, she cannot bear to speak the words which implies extreme pain.
- This seems like quite a sarcastic/ironic comment on how a journey of peace as shown in the previous peaceful language over a dove, has lead her down the path of pain and death again. This links to the semantic field of pain and injury throughout the whole poem which suggests that no matter how hard she tries she cannot shake the images of her son mixed with his pain.
What is this quote from “this is wear it has led me”?
Poppies
Analyse : “sellotape bandaged”
Familiar noun/military metaphor. The refernce to sellotape is a familiar homely image, “bandaged” can be used to imply wound or injury / harm. Constant references to pain and death show how worried she is.
- since its bandaged around her hand it implies that she also has injuries but she cares more about herslef. This suggets that she knows that her fixating on her possibly dead son is unhealthy and harming her but she cares about him and his wellbeing too much to care about herself.
