What is population distribution?
How people are spread out over an area.
What is population density?
Average number of people per square km.
What is urbanisation?
The increase in the proportion of people living in towns and cities.
What is birth rate?
The number of live births for every 1 000 of the population per year.
How is birth rate calculated?
Births/population x 1 000 = Birth rate
What is death rate?
The number of deaths for every 1 000 of the population per year.
How is death rate calculated?
Deaths/population x 1 000 = Death rate
What is the rate of natural increase (RNI)?
Difference between the number of births and the number of deaths.
In a population pyramid, when the base is wide what does it tell us?
Higher birth rate.
In a population pyramid, when the base is narrow what does it tell us?
Lower birth rate.
In a population pyramid, when the top is wide what does it tell us?
Lower death rate and high life expectancy.
In a population pyramid, when the top is narrow what does it tell us?
Higher death rate and low life expectancy.

What is immigration?

What is a refugee?
People who are no longer in their country. They are fleeing armed conflict/persecution. They are recognised precisely because it is too dangerous to return home, and they need sanctuary elsewhere.
What is a migrant?
Person who chooses to move not because of a direct threat of persecution/death, but mainly to improve their lives by finding work, or in some cases for education, family reunion, or other reasons.
