advantages of youthful population
In the future the working population will grow
which will mean a growth in the economy. This
money can be invested to improve services and
the population’s quality of life. This is called a
demographic dividend.
• legislation in Niger to try to protect girls from
childhood marriage and also to keep them in
school
• The government in Niger are working with other
groups (world bank and village chiefs) to promote
education for girls and improve healthcare.

Fertility rate-6.95 this means that there is
pressure on maternal and childhood healthcare
services
• Only 50% of children receive a full set of
vaccinations
• Many people live in poverty so cannot access
safe food, water or contraception and healthcare
• More than half of the girls in Niger are married
before the age of 15
There are pressure on schools due to the amount of
children. Many children do not go to school. This
means that they are kept in the cycle of poverty.

Many businesses target the elderly to make a
profit e.g. cruises
• Grandparent can look after children while
parents at work- lowering cost of child care for
families
• They provide knowledge and wisdom to
families and society
• The over 65s still work. They can work full time
or part time which is good for the government
or they can have volunteer roles which is still
important to society.
disadvantages of ageing population
Many elderly are worried about costs and being
lonely so are committing crimes so that they go
to prison.
• Health care and nursing costs in 2025 are
expected to be almost $1 trillion – about 12%
of GDP (gross domestic product)
• Pensions will have to be cut as the government
can’t afford to pay them.
• Shortages in jobs – Healthcare, construction
and agriculture
