Population Regulation Flashcards
(7 cards)
Population Regulation
Population growth is regulated by factors that limit population growth - some are density dependent while others are density independent.
Density Dependant Factors
Density-dependent factors reduce a population when number are high and allow the population to increase when numbers are low. (influenced by how crowded the population is).
Density Dependant Factors (biotic)
- Food supply
- disease
- predation
- parasites
- competition
Effect of more crowded organisms
- Compete more for resources
- More found by predators
- Spread disease and parasites more rapidly
Density Independent
Density-independent factors are those that act independently of population density and affect all individuals more or less equally.
Density Independent Factors (Abiotic)
Physical Factors:
- Rainfall and temperature
Catastrophic events:
- Earthquakes and flooding
Predation
Predation provides energy to prolong the life and promote the reproduction of the organism that does the killing.
