populations in ecosystems Flashcards
(13 cards)
what are species
a group is a similar organisms that can reproduce to give fertile offspring
population
a group of organisms of the same species living in a particular habitat at a particular time.
community
consists of populations of different species within an area
ecosystem
is the community of biotic and abiotic conditions in that area
habitat
small part of the ecosystem where a population lives
niche
role of species within its habitat
abiotic factors
the non living features of the ecosystem
biotic
the living features of an ecosystem
carrying capacity
maximum stable population size that an ecosystem can support
it can be altered by natural or human activities
interspecific competition
between different species
the more similar the niches the more competition
intraspecific
within a species. animals often have their own territory to reduce this competition. usually there is competition for a mate
predator prey population curves
population sizes are interlinked
why are predator prey relationships more complex
this is because there may be intraspecific competition in the prey for eg space or food so limiting prey population sizes even if predator numbers arent high
