Patriarchy- no main male characters on screen, the women are still constricted by male characters- 1700s women undermined by men. FIlm gives women depth and value

Satires patriarchy- Mr Park and Mr Kim in a mock battle with headdresses and toy tomahawks.
Women driving force behind change- Mrs Park educates her children and provides with idyllic childhood. Mrs Kim keeps family grounded. Ki -Jung executes plans. Moon-Gwang determined to look after her husband.

Male and female gaze. Male gaze reflected in how the portrait is for the benefit of a man.
Female gaze- the observing of Heloise throughout. Focus on looks between Marianne and Heloise .

Debate about capitalism and the divide between rich and poor. Deepening class divide, semi basements, idolisation of America.
Portrait Political/Institutional Context
Sciamma’s aim was not to use historical setting to comment on present day issues on gender and sexuality- ‘wants to transmit from the past which has never been transmitted, which is the intimate lives of women.’
Sciamma founding member of 50:50 group of over 1500 filmmakers addressing gender imbalance and sexual harassment in the film and tv industries.
Parasite Political Context
Satirises South Koreans as Americophiles- used as a running joke at the Park’s expense, their capitalist drive and ideologies are a weakness which leads to their downfall and makes them an easy target.
Shows how the worst elements of human nature will surface regardless of the political system.

Produced by SK conglomerate Barunsen E&A and distributed by CJ entertainment. Demonstrating the ability of SK film industry to compete globally.
Portrait- Orpheus and Eurydice
Greek Legend, Orpheus must lead Eurydice out of hell, with out turning around to make sure she is following, or else she is trapped forever. Ultimately Orpheus choses to look back and loses Eurydice. This theme of looking back is repeated throughout Portrait- e.g. wedding dress scene
