Sciamma’s aim was not to use historical setting to comment on present day issues on gender and sexuality- ‘wants to transmit from the past which has never been transmitted, which is the intimate lives of women.’

Portrait- Orpheus and Eurydice

A

Greek Legend, Orpheus must lead Eurydice out of hell, with out turning around to make sure she is following, or else she is trapped forever. Ultimately Orpheus choses to look back and loses Eurydice. This theme of looking back is repeated throughout Portrait- e.g. wedding dress scene
