The standard body position ?
anatomic position
What does the anatomic position look like?
Upright, face-forward, with arms by the side and palms facing forward. The feet are parallel and slightly apart.
Midsagittal Plane
Is used to describe the sagittal plane as it bisects the body vertically through the midline marked by the navel, dividing the body exactly in left and right side.
Superior Portion
Right upper quarter of body
Inferior Portion
Right lower quarter of body
Transverse Plane
An imaginary line dividing the body in half. Superior upper and Inferior lower
Anterior
toward the front of the body
Posterior
toward the back of the body
Medial
toward the midline of the body
Lateral
toward the side of the body
Proximal
Nearer to the point of attachment or to a given reference point
Distal
farther from the point of attachment or from a given reference point
Superior
above;
toward the head
Inferior
below;
toward the lower end of the spine
superficial
closer to the surface of the body
deep
closer to the center of the body
What is a cell?
The basic unit of all living things
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells performing a specific task. For example: muscle tissue produces movement.
What are organs?
Two or more kinds of tissue that together perform special body functions. For example, skin is an organ composed of epithelial, connective tissue, and nervous tissue.
What is a body “system”?
A group of organs that work together to perform a complex body function. For example, the nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves.
Where is the cranial cavity?
A space inside the skull or cranium containing the brain.
What is in the thoracic cavity?
heart, lungs, esophagus, trachea, bronchi, thymus
What is in the abdominal cavity?
Lowest portion of the esophagus, the stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and ureters.
What is in the pelvic cavity?
Urinary bladder, certain reproductive organs, part of the large intestine, and the rectum.
