Social class post 1850
LC- worked long hours, less time for sport
MC- had more time & money, so involved in the development of sports
UC- still had lots of time and access to do sports like hunting and real tennis

Limited access to sport for women, although this began to change

Development of laws- sports became less violent
- RSPCA formed, decline in blood sports e.g baiting
Education and literacy post 1850
State education introduced
- LC had access to education

The factory worked work long hours, so a limited amount of time
-In 1849, 10 Hour Act was introduced so week was reduced
Money post 1850
-Factories realized long hours and poor pay didn’t make a healthy and loyal workforce
-Factory teams set up, any lost earnings were covered as broken time payments
Amateur vs professional
Pre-industrial times:
-Upper and middle class= love of the sport (amateur)
-working class= couldn’t afford to play for enjoyment, played professionally
21st century:
amateur and professional can come from any working class

Arguments for remaining amteur
- Preserve traditional values
- Maintain olympic ideas e.g. excellence, respect, courage, friendship, determination
- Maintaian independence from media
Arguments for becoming PROFESSIONAL
- improve opportunity for working class
- Increased standard of professional sport
- media coverage increase as standards improve
Arguments against becoming PROFESSIONAL
- Under mindes amatuer sporting values
- Commercial pressures- more deviant behaviour
- Sport becomes unequal-large clubs dominating
