Q

Define a non-stress test.

A

A nonstress test is a common prenatal test used to check on a baby’s health. During a nonstress test, the baby’s heart rate is monitored to see how it responds to the baby’s movements. The term “nonstress” refers to the fact that nothing is done to place stress on the baby during the test.

Q

What is a Contraction test?

A

This test looks at how the baby’s heart rate reacts when the uterus contracts. During a contraction stress test, if adequate uterine activity doesn’t occur on its own the patient will be given intravenous oxytocin or be asked to rub their nipples to induce uterine activity.

Q

What is Cardiotocography (CTG)?

A

measures the baby’s heart rate. At the same time it also monitors the contractions in the womb (uterus). CTG is used both before birth (antenatally) and during labour, to monitor the baby for any signs of distress. By looking at various different aspects of the baby’s heart rate, doctors and midwives can see how the baby is coping

Q

What is a biophysical profile?

A

A biophysical profile combines a nonstress test with a foetal ultrasound that evaluates the baby’s breathing, body movements, muscle tone and amniotic fluid level.
