Post- surgery precautions Flashcards
(29 cards)
Total shoulder arthoplasty
Head of humerus & glenoidHem
Hemiarthroplasty
Head of the humerus
Reverse total shoulder
Ball is placed in the glenoid and the glenoid in the head of the humerus
Rotator cuff repair can result from
Degeneration or trauma
Rotator cuff repairs
Arthroscopic repair, open repair, mini- open repair
Proximal humerus fracture
Typically treated without surgical repair and patient typically immobilized in sling or splint
Precautions for Proximal humerus fracture
Protection of surgical site & healing of the structured, ADL while maintaining ROM precautions, patient education regarding pain control, exercise within surgical guidelines
Total hip arthroplasty posterior precautions
NO: hip flexion above 90 degrees, adduction past neutral, internal rotation
Total hip arthroplasty anterior precautions
NO: hip extension and external rotation
Global hip precautions
NO: flexion above 90 degrees, adduction past neutral, internal & external rotation; nothing in prone or bridging
Hip fracture
Common fracture among older adults, typically involves ORIF, physician will determine WB status, follow hip precautions
Pelvis fracture
Rare, typically result from high impact and typically treated non- surgically, increased prevalence with osteoporosis
NWB
0% with walker/ crutches
TDWB
10-15% with walker/ crutches
PWB
30% with walker/ crutches
50% WB
50% with walker/ crutches
FWB
75-100% with cane
WBAT
As tolerated with cane or no-device
Total knee arthroplasty precautions
Patient will be told how far he/ she can bend the operated knee, usually no precautions, avoid movements that twist the knee or cause pain such as kneeling, jumping or strenuous exercises, put only the amount of weight on operated leg as instructed by physician, walk as often as directed by surgeon
Degenerative disc disease
Can result from injury, most common a result of degneration from the aging process
Disc herniation
disc material extend beyond the intervertebral disc space; causes inflammation and secondary nerve root impingement
Spinal stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal; typically caused by OA
Spondyloisthesis
Anterior sliding of one vertebra over another; seen in older adults often due to degenerative changes in the facet joints
Discectomy
Removal of herniated disc to alleviate pressure on spinal nerve root
