A

That society is in a state of constant change which is calls ‘liquid modernity’ whereby social structures are breaking down.

Outline a media saturated society

A

Concept suggested by baudrillard as society is dominated by media imagery. The mass media has changed from providing a basic reality, to distorting the way we see the world. He calls this ‘hyper reality’. For example, coverage of wars are Sanatized and made ‘appropriate’ for viewing (a media constructed spectacle).

Outline pick and mix identities

A

Baudrillard suggest identity’s are no longer formed by social class and people form identity’s through Images and signs like designer labels taken from the media. People can pick and mix to portray any identities they want through: clothes, leisure activities, sport; essentially forming their choice of identity.

A

Life in a shopping mall, where people consume goods to portray their identity in the globalised consumer market.

Why does leotard claim that meta narratives can no longer be applicable to postmodernist society?

A

Because society is now changing so rapidly, society is fragmented into so many different groups and society is essentially ‘chaotic’ so cannot be characterised by one perspective.

A

Marx - for communism, claimed modern capitalist society would end to inequality in class

Durkheim - claimed that the new collective conscious in modern society would be established

Weber - modern society had a tendency towards rational goal orientates action

Give one strengths and one limitations of postmodernity

A

Recognises the changing state of society which is actually occurring and the impact of it such as globalisation

They use little research and back their studies up with examples. For example, there is no reason why people can’t decipher fact from fiction wen watching tv.
