Wider notion of social harm into 2 categories: Harms of reduction and repression
Reduction = Use of power results in immediate loss of possession/harm to victim (theft,murder)
Repression = Individuals growth and development threatened, harder to prevent/police (hate crime,sexual harassment)
FOCAULT (KNOW)
Surveillance likely to become effective = regulate behaviour and reducing crime in contemp society
Being watched = Less likely to commit, higher chance of being caught
BAUMAN AND LYON (KNOW)
Liquid surveillance = way to understand interaction w/ surveillance
I.e. mobile phones, passports
Willingly use + enables watch by state/organisations = TRANSPARENCY
UNCONSCIOUS OF SURVEILLANCE = ERODES CIVIL LIBERTY
Conclusion
From Right to privacy to having nothing to hide = Surveillance as mechanism of social control
