Poultry and the Environment Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the key differences between altricial and precocial chickens? Which one do we deal with in Canada
- presence of down feathers
- ability to feed independently
- ability to leave nest soon after
Precocial are preferred
Where and when were chickens domesticated
Thailand/Vietnam 8000 BC
How long does it take a chicken to develop fully?
7-21 days
What are the sensible methods of heat loss
- Conduction
- Convection
- Radiation
Conduction
the transfer of heat from molecule to molecule
Which type of meat is most consumed in Canada and why
Chicken because its produced faster and therefore cheaper
Convection
The transfer of heat from the movement of air (chicken barns)
Radiation
Heat in the form of electromagnetic waves
What is insensible temperature?
Temperature change to evaporation
Evaporation via respiration in chickens
List the types of thermoregulation methods
- shivering
- panting
- ptiloerection
- vasomotion
- behaviour
why are hot temperatures an issue for chickens? and RH
they pant and lose too much CO2, leading to deficiency of CO2 in the blood and die
Why are cold temperatures an issue for chickens?
more huddling, use more energy to warm internally and less productive
- disease goes up
- cost to heat the barn
What are the function of feathers? is it better to have them wet or dry?
- skin protection and thermoregulation
- Wet feathers are bad and do not keep birds warm
How do chicken production affect the environment?
CO2 emissions and ammonia
- litter is high in Nitrogen and Phosphorous
Poor management can lead to leaching into waterways
