Q

What does the quote “look on my words,ye mighty, and despair” mean

A

The first technique is irony.Ozymandias commands others to “despair” at his accomplishments expecting that the statue would be an everlasting symbol of power, however the statue is merely a ruin in a empty dessert
This is ironic as he thought it would last forever but it’s transient (fleeting).Shelley uses this to highlight the transient nature of human power.Showing how the greatest achievements are eventually eroded by nature and time.Tyrannical (cruel) power is not ever lasting.

Q

What does the quote “boundless and bare, the lone and level sands stretch far away” mean.

A

The use of the alliteration “boundless and bare” draws the reader’s attention and emphasises the how desolate (empty) and expansive the desert is surrounding the broken statue.

The imagery of “lone level sands” emphasises how desolate the dessert it (emptiness). It paints the picture of a vast natural world that is indifferent to human accomplishments and has erased all traces of this.As the statue is immortalised the broken statue represents that his long lasting power is broken.

Q

How is form shown in ozymandias

A

It’s a sonnet (love poem) and Shelley does this to mock how there was a lack of love for ozymandias and also mocks the idea that human power is sempiternal (forever lasting).
