Kamikaze

“and enough fuel for a one way journey into history”. This quote suggests that the pilot is flying into certain death.

“a samurai sword”. This suggests that being a Kamikaze is quite a patriotic thing to do. It is looked down upon if you do not carry it out.
Charge of the Light Brigade
“Into the valley of death rode the six hundred”. This also suggests that the soldiers are riding into certain death.

“Honour the Light Brigade” This suggests that you should be proud of what the Light Brigade achieved because it was such a heroic mission.
The Comparison
The comparison between the two poems is that they are both about national pride. However the man that was meant to carry out the Kamikaze mission didn’t therefore he was looked down upon by his family. Whereas the Light Brigade were heroic therefore they are honoured and praised heavily in the poem.
Ozymandias

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings”. This suggests that he is proud of his powerful position. He is being boastful and arrogant about the position that he is in.

“Look on my works ye mighty and despair”. This is implying that those who see him should feel sad and unhappy about themselves because they aren’t in such a privileged position. He is being boastful once again.
My Last Duchess

“That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall”. This suggests that the last Duchess belongs to him.

“At starting is my object”. This suggests that he believes the Duchess belongs to him. He views her very primitively.
Comparison
The comparison between these two poems is that in both poems the two men are viewing their belongings very primitively. They are very proud of their achievements.

“Marks of weakness, marks of woe”. This suggests that as the man is walking through London, the desperation is etched across the people’s faces. They are in a desperate situation.

“How the chimney-sweeper’s cry”. This suggests that the children that are forced to sweep the chimney’s are being reduced to tears because their work is so painful and arduous.

“Dem tell me wha dem want to tell me”. The British Education system is controlling what the man learns and what schoolchildren learn rather than letting them learn about their own history.
Comparison
The comparison between the two poems is that in both poems a group of people are being oppressed for others gain.
Exposure

“But nothing happens”. This suggests that this group of soldiers’ experiences in the First World War were very dull and very monotonous. It also suggests that the boredom of war drove the soldiers crazy and severely affected the men’s mental states. The soldiers are also powerless to what is going on.

“We only know war lasts”. This again reinforces the message that the soldiers are powerless to what is going on. They are just under the command of the generals and the people that are above them.
Bayonet Charge

“In bewilderment then he almost stopped”. This suggests that the soldier was confused and muddled as to what was going on. It also suggests that he was confused due to the effects of war. War was having a negative effect on the soldier.
Comparison
The comparison between these two poems is that they are both about war having an effect on the soldiers that partake in the conflict.

“I walk right over it week after week”. This suggests that the man is still affected by what he saw and it will always haunt him. He is permanently scarred by what he saw.

“The image of agony”. This suggests that what the man saw is horrific. Also it suggests that it will always be in his mind due to the fact that it was so harrowing.
Kamikaze

“My mother never spoke again in his presence”. This suggests that because he didn’t carry out the mission, his mother is refusing to speak to him. His mother is ashamed and the son has shamed the family honour.
Comparison
The comparison between the two poems is that they are both about events that have haunted people forever.
Poppies

“Hoping to hear your playground voice catching on the wind”. This suggests that the mother has lost her son in battle and she is reminiscing about when she used to pick him up from school.
