Power Production & Energy Consumption Flashcards
(27 cards)
What does Non-Renewable mean
A resource that cannot be replenished once it used up.
-Tgey have a limited supply and cannot be used indefinitely.
2 major Non-Renewable types
-Fossil fuels
-nuclear energy
What are fossil fuels
Fossilized remains of plants and animals that died millions of years ago and transformed due to specific conditions.
We’re are fossil fuels found
Found underground layers of rock and sediment
Forms of fossil fuels
-oil
-coal
-natural gas
Pros of fossil fuels
-cheap form of power
-easily accessible energy source
-easy to transport and store
-Power station can be build anywhere
Cons of fossil fuels
-non renewable
-produces large amounts of CO2, contributing to climate change
-mining destroys habitats
-pollutions of water, soil, and air nearby areas
Electromagnetic induction(how
It works)
- A power source generates heat to turn a turbine
- The turbine spins to rotate magnets inside the generator
- The magnets in turn spin coils of copper wire
- The electrical energy is delivered to a place where a transformer boosts the generators voltage for long distances transmission
What is Electromagnetic induction
Moving a conducting wire through a magnetic field
Pros of Nuclear energy
- Generates huge amounts of energy (more than we can use)
- doesant produces carbon dioxide(CO2)
-Power stations can be built anywhere (typically near a water body) - low operating costs
What is Nuclear Energy
A type of energy released from the nucleus, the core of atoms, made up of protons and neutrons
Cons of nuclear energy
- non renewable.
- power stations are expensive and take a long time to build.
- nearby water bodies absorb excess heat and can cause ecoststem destruction, and mining destroys habitats.
-produces dangerous, radioactive waste and can create radioactive hot zones if they explode.
What is a Renewable resource
A resource that doesn’t run out, because it is naturally replenished even if it takes time to be replenished.
What are the 6 main types Of renewable resources
-Wind energy
-solar energy
-hydro energy
-geothermal energy
-biomass energy
-tidal energy
Pros of renewable resources
-renewable and unlimited supply
-Low or no greenhouse, gas emissions
-less toxic waste or spills
-creates new jobs
-reduces reliance on imported fuels
Cons of renewable resources
-expensive infrastructure and installation
-weather dependent in, may not generate enough power to supply the baseload to customers
-Requires mining for materials to manufacture
-Batteries or other systems are required to store power
-wildlife and biodiversity can be harmed during the mining process by amount of space used or by the infrastructure itself
Energy consumption equation
Energy(KWH)=power(KW)x time(h)
Power cost equation
Cost($)= Energy (KWH)x price/KWH
What is energy efficiency
Efficiency is the ratio of useful energy that comes out of the total energy that went in
Electrical efficiency calculation
Efficiency(%)= E out (J)/ E in (J)x 100
What is Efficiency measured in
%
What is Energy measured in
KWH
What is phantom power
Appliances and electronics that draw power from outlets, even if they are turned off
What is sustainability
Meeting our energy needs without damaging the environment or using up resources that future generations will need (individual things we can do to save power)
