PPT1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Ecosystem is …
An ecosystem is where an organism lives within the environment ;
Ecology is …
The study of how organisms exist in their environment.
Why do we study the science of ecology?
Because How nature is organized and the roles that each organism plays within its environment can be explained through the science of ecology.
What are the two types of factors in the Ecosystem?
(1) biotic.
(2) abiotic.
Mention Some Ecosystems
Desert Pond (Freshwater) Grasslands Rainforest Coral Reef (Marine) Tundra
What are the two types of Tundra?
Arctic Tundra
Alpine tundra
Desert
Deserts are areas with little or no rainfall.
Pond (Freshwater) Ecosystem
refers to the freshwater ecosystem where there are communities of organism dependent on each other with the prevailing water environment for their nutrients and survival.
Grasslands ecosystem
where the vegetation is dominated by grasses and other herbaceous (non-woody) plants
Rainforest ecosystem
forest ecosystems characterized by high levels of
rainfall, an enclosed canopy and high species diversity
Coral Reef (Marine) Ecosystem
A coral reef is an underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals.
Tundra ecosystem
A vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen (Arctic Tundra) or above the timberline on high mountains (alpine tundra). A defining feature of the tundra is the distinct lack of trees.
What are Biotic Factors?
Biotic factors are all the living things in an ecosystem. Bio- means life.
Examples: Trees, grass, fish, wolves, fungi
Organisms that were alive at one time or once part of a living thing
Examples: tree trunks, fallen leaves
What are Abiotic Factors?
Abiotic factors are all of the non living things in an ecosystem.
These are things that are not alive but may provide shelter and habitat.
Examples: rocks, water, sand
Environmental factors are also abiotic Examples: Temperature, wind, snow
What is the difference between Shelter and Habitat?
Shelter
a shielded or safe condition; protection
Habitat
the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism,
site where an organism or a group lives.
What is the difference between Ecosystem and Habitat?
Ecosystem is similar to a habitat, but with one crucial difference: Ecosystems are self- sufficient, cyclical systems
A community and the interactions of living and nonliving things in an area
