What is liturgical worship?
Services that follow a set pattern written out by the church
What is non-liturgical worship?
Form of Christian worship that is less formal and structured
What happens in litrugical worship?
- Priest leads congregation in formal prayers
- Passages from bible read out with sermon based on these
- E.g. celebration of Eucharist
What happens in non-liturgical worship?
- No set order or ritual
- Service may change order to suit themes
- Basic structure might remain the same - changed order, number of hymns, types of prayer
Advantages and disadvantages of liturgical worship?
- Familiar structure helps people feel connected to tradition
- Set rituals create unity in the congregation
- Can feel repetitive or impersonal for some
- Less room for personal expression or spontaneity
What happens in informal worship?
- People share spontaneous prayers or thoughts
- Quakers sit in silence - free to pray or speak out loud
Advantages and disadvantages of non-liturgical worship?
- More freedom - some people dont like structure
- More flexibility to needs of congregation
- Less emphasis on tradition may reduce connection
- Unsuitable for level of respect that religious services require
Advantages and disadvantages of private worship?
- Private worship helps them keep God in mind throughout every day lives
- Better personal connection with God
- No guidance or shared community
- Lacks the authority and shared experience of church worship
What is a sacrament?
- A ceremony by which Christains believe they receive Gods grace
- They are seen as visible signs of invisible blessings, signifying God’s love and support
What is baptism?
- Seen as a sacrament because Jesus was baptised
- He told his disciples to go out and baptise people
- Holy water poured three times over forehead (trinity)
What is believers baptism?
- Initiation into the church by immersion of water - people old enough to understand the ceremony
- Willing to live a Christian life
What is infant baptism?
- Baby has holy water sprinkled over their face three times to represent washing away of sin
- Decision is made by parents or guardians
Significance of prayer?
- Helps Christians build up a discipline which gives them strength to cope in times of trouble
- Helps Christians find peace and a sense of communion with God in their everyday lives as followers of Jesus
Importance of Lords prayer?
- Reminds Christians that they must forgive in order to be forgiven
- Brings sense of unity and spiritual purpose in society at important times e.g. commemoration services
- Based on words Jesus used when he told his disciples how to pray
What is informal prayer?
- Individual talks to God with own words
- Extempore prayers
- More personal - show individual connection to God
What is transubstination?
Change of the substance of bread into the body of Christ and of the whole sub stance of wine into the substance of his blood
What is the holy communion?
- Where Christians remember the the last supper with bread and wine
- Many denominations see it as a sacrament
- It is seen as “the source and summit of the Christian life” - Catechism of the Christian church 1324
What is Eucharist?
From a greek word meaning “thanksgiving” - a service in which the sacrificial death and resurrection of jesus are celebreated using bread and wine
Why is the Holy Communion important for Buddhists?
- Through it they believe they recieve Gods grace by joining in the great sacrifice of Jesus
- Joins people in their faith and gives them the strength to live Christian lives and face any problems they may encounter
What were Jesus last words during last supper?
- Broke bread and said “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me”
- “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me”
What happens during holy communion of nonconformists?
- Open table where people receive bread and wine
- Or people break off a piece as it is passed around the seated congregation
- Sometimes non-alcoholic
What happens during holy communion of catholic church?
- Bread and wine brought to altar
- Priest and congregation give sign of peace to each other
- Members of congregation come forward and receive communion
- Preist blesses people
- Parts of service are latin
What happens during holy communion of orthodox church?
- Preist comes through royals doors and selects one loaf to be blessed
- Bread divided into 4 parts - 3 parts consecrated as the body and blood of christ - 4th not blessed and broken into small pieces
- Priest gives the bread and wine on spoon to the people who come forward for communion
- They get pieces of unconsecrated bread to take home as a sign of being in the christian community
What is a pilgrimage?
