- limited transport + communication —> events had to be local, specific to each community and used natural resources available to them e.g open land for mob sports
- widespread illiteracy—> rules were basic and local e.g unlimited no of players, no time limit, no officials in mob games
- harsh society —> activities were aggressive + male dominated reflecting a harsh society
- seasonal time —> long working hours meant recreation was occasional + restricted to annual events when breaks allowed participation
