What is prejudice?
Negative attitude towards a group of people that may lead to discrimination - pre-judgement
4 characteristics of a majority group
- Tendency to believe superiority
- Minority group is different from them
- More powerful and important

Whats old fashioned prejudice?
Prejudice where members of the majority group openly reject members of the minority group
Whats modern prejudice?
Prejudice thats more subtle, hidden and expressed in ways more likely to be accepted within the majority group
Discrimination
The behaviour that stems from a prejudiced attitude towards a minority group of people
Direct discrimination
Treats the individually unfairly e.g a pregnant women may be overlooked for a job
Indirect discrimination
Has ‘rules’ that effects a group of people

Stigma
Feeling of shame or disgrace experienced by an individual for a characteristic that differentiates them from others
Social stigma
Negative stereotypes that come to define people and don’t allow them to be seen as an individual
Self-stigma
Internalisation of negative stereotype and can lead to low self esteem
