Prelims Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is a population parameter?
A summary measure describing a characteristic of the population using population data.
What is a sample statistic?
A summary measure describing a characteristic of the sample using sample data.
What is the difference between a parameter and a statistic?
Parameter uses population data, statistic uses sample data.
What is a random experiment?
A process repeatable under similar conditions but with unpredictable outcomes.
What is a sample space?
The set of all possible outcomes of a random experiment.
What is an event?
A subset of the sample space.
What is the symbol for a sample space?
Ω
What are the two methods to specify a set?
Roster method and rule method.
What is SRSWOR?
Simple random sampling without replacement.
What is SRSWR?
Simple random sampling with replacement.
What is the probability of the sample space (sure event)?
1
What is the probability of the empty set (impossible event)?
0
What is the formula for classical probability?
P(A) = n(A) / n(Ω)
What does ‘mutually exclusive’ mean?
Events cannot happen at the same time.
What is the formula for the union of two events?
P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A ∩ B)
What is the formula for the complement of an event?
P(Aᶜ) = 1 - P(A)
When are events independent?
If P(A ∩ B) = P(A) * P(B)
What are the three approaches to assigning probability?
Classical, relative frequency, and subjective.
What is a random variable?
A function that assigns a real number to each outcome in the sample space.
What is the range of probability values?
From 0 to 1
What is a discrete random variable?
A variable that can take a countable number of values.
What is an example of a discrete random variable?
Number of heads in 3 coin tosses.
What is a probability mass function (PMF)?
A function that gives the probability that a discrete random variable is exactly equal to some value.
What is the total of all probabilities in a PMF?
1
