Conformity
Among the leading causes of prejudice and stereotyping is, conforming to the notions of others, even when they’re not justified. Most of us seem to believe that “majority is authority”. So, instead of taking the risk of having fingers pointed at us, we seem to adopt the prejudices of the society or larger group.
Fear
This tendency to conform is further supported by the fact that most of us, if not all, have a fear of being isolated or rejected by others, whether it is by friends, family or even acquaintances.
ideas
Biases that fuel negative prejudgments are often learned from childhood through family, and perhaps through social networks as an adult.
Not
Being exclusive to our own beliefs, having less patience to hear what others have to say
Not spending
As well as, avoiding people who are different from ourselves, can very well contribute to the prejudice.
Want
More often than not, we may stereotype others to understand them easily, perhaps to classify them as “friend or foe” and to determine our response towards them.
Rely
In the classroom, if we’re asked to pick people we would like to work with, we usually choose our friends over others. We may not mean to offend the rest but, simply relying on familiarity and past knowledge can set stage for prejudice and discrimination.
Insecurities
The need to believe that we are better than everyone else is a proof of insecurity, and this may cause us to stereotype others or have prejudice against them.
Offend
We may stereotype or judge others to avoid being judged ourselves, by drawing negative attention away from us.
Scapegoating
This may be implemented by “scapegoating”, in which case one group or individual blame an innocent for their own actions, in order to ‘escape’ from the problem.
Inability
In extreme cases, the fear of a situation getting out of hand may become so overwhelming that we may resort to stereotyping and prejudice, to bend circumstance to our will.
