What is a METAR and what are the two types?
A metar is an hourly surface observation of conditions observed at an airport
2 types
- Routine metar report that is transmitted hourly
- SPECI- a special report that can be given at any time to update the METAR for rapidly changing weather
What are Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs)
A TAF is a concise statement of the expected meteorological conditions significant to aviation for a specified time period within 5 statue miles of the center of the airport
What is an AIRMET
Advisories of significant weather phenomena that describe conditions at intensities lower than those requiring issue of a SIGMET
Intended for all pilots in the preflight and enroute phase of flight
Available in two formats- text bulletins and graphics
What is a SIGMET
A SIGMET advises of weather that is potentially hazardous to all aircraft
Valid for 4 hours
A. Severe icing not associated with thunderstorms
B. Severe or extreme turbulence or clear air turbulence not associated with thunderstorms
C. Widespread dust storms or sandstorms lowering surface visibility to below 3 miles
D. Volcanic ash
What is a Connective Sigmet?
Convective Sigmets are issued when any of the following occur:
- severe thunderstorms and embedded thunderstorms occurring for more than 30 minutes
— severe thunderstorm when accompanied by surface winds greater than or equal to 50 knot
Hail at the surface greater than or equal to 3/4in in diameter
Tornadoes
— embedded thunderstorms are obscured by haze, non convective clouds or precipitation
-a line of thunderstorms at least 50 miles long affecting at least 40% of its length
- area of thunderstorms producing precipitation greater than or equal to heavy precipitation, affecting 40% of an area covering 3,000 square miles
Other weather sources
FSS, ATIS, AWOS
What are the two types of NOTAMS
Notam-Ds - distance
FDC NOTAMS (flight data center)
What is pressure altitude
Pressure altitude is what your altimeter indicates when the altimeter setting window is set to 29.92, the standard pressure at sea level.
When you set that as your reference, the altimeter tells you your altitude compared to standard altitude
Define pressure altitude and state why it is important
Pressure altitude is the altitude indicator when the altimeter setting window is adjusted to 29.92
Pressure altitude is important as a basis for determining aircraft performance
Density Altitude
Density altitude is pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature
Density altitude tells you how your airplane will perform
Performance effects with density altitude
High density altitude refers to thin air, while low density altitude refers to dense air.
High altitude, high temps, and high humidity decrease performance
What does the mixture do?
It regulates the fuel to air ratio. The purpose of a mixture control is to prevent the mixture from becoming too rich at high altitudes, due to decreasing air density.
What is fouling? And how do you correct it?
Fouling is running the mixture too rich
Methods of obtaining TFRs (temporary flight restrictions)
You can verify over the phone with a flight service station, or online on 1800wxbrief.com or fitplan.com
Consequences of TFR penetration
Look up
V speed VSO
Stalling speed or Minimum speed at which the airplane is controllable in the landing configuration at the most forward center of gravity
40 knots
V speed VS1
Stalling speed or the minimum steady flight speed at which the airplane is controllable
48 knots
V speed VNO
Maximum structural cruising speed is the speed that should not be exceeded except in smooth air, then only with caution
129 knots
V Speed VNE
The speed limit that should never be exceeded
163 knots
V speed VA and why does it change with weight?
Maneuvering speed is the maximum speed at which full or abrupt control movements may be used without overstressing the airframe
105 knots at max weight, 2550
90 knots at 1900 pounds
V speed VX
Best angle of climb.
Most amount of altitude gained in a given horizontal distance
V speed VY
Best rate of climb
Greatest gain in altitude in a given time
