What is a Primary Survery?
Patient assessment completed within 60-90 seconds. Allowing immediate assessment and management of life-threatening injuries.
Primary Survey Algorithm
General Observations, Catastrophic Haemorrhage, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation.
D.R.A.B.C.D.E
Danger, Response, Airway (including c-spine), Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Expose/examine/evaluate.
SOCRATES (acronym)
Site, Onset, Character, Radiate, Associated Pain, Time/duration, Exacerbating/relieving factors, Severity
SAMPLE (acronym)
Signs/symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last meal, Events leading up to injury
OPA - Measurement
Middle of the teeth to the angle of the jaw
NPA- Measurement
Tip of the nose to the earlobe
Adult Respiratory Rate (RR)
12-18 BPM
Adult Heart Rate (HR)
60-100 BPM
Adult Blood Pressure (BP)
Range between 90/60 - 120/80 mmHg
Adult Capillary Refill Time (CRT)
<2 Seconds
Adult Blood Glucose (BM)
4.4-7.2 mmol/L
Adult Pupils
Equal in size (approx. 3mm) and reactive to light
Adult Oxygen Saturations (spO2)
94-99%
Adult Temperature
36-37.5 degrees celsius
