Principles of Anaesthetics Flashcards
(14 cards)
what do GA interfere with?
neuronal ion channels
what do GA do?
hyperpolarise neurones making them less likely to fire
pharmacology of IV agents?
allosteric binding to GABA receptors which open chloride ion channels
cerebral function in GA?
lost from top down with most complex processes lost first - hearing is last
reflexes in GA?
spared as small number of synapses
wha is in inhalational anaesthetics?
halogenated hydrocarbons
what does MAC mean?
minimum alveolar concentration
what is MAC?
measure of potency - lower the MAC the more potent
GA effects on the central CVS? (2)
depress cardiovascular centre
reduce sympathetic outflow
GA effects directly on CVS?
negatively inotropic
vasodilation
venodilation
GA effect on MAP?
MAP = CO X SVR
negative inotropic and venodilation decrease CO
vasodilation decreases SVR
what do GA agents do to respiratory system? (4)
reduce hypoxic and hypercarbic drive
decreases tidal volume and increases rate
paralyse cilia
decrease FRC
what do muscle relaxants cause?
apnoea
why give intraoperative anaesthesia? (3)
prevention of arousal
opiates contribute to hypnotic effect of GA
suppression of reflex responses to painful stimuli
