Principles of Ecology Flashcards
(33 cards)
What is an atom? (1st level)
Atoms make up molecules (ex. carbon)
What is a molecule? (2nd level)
The building blocks of life (ex. carbon dioxide)
What is a macromolecule? (3rd level)
A large molecule (ex. proteins)
What is an organelle? (4th level)
The organs of a cell (ex. hemoglobin)
What is a cell? (5th level)
The smallest functional unit of an organism (ex. red blood cell)
What is tissue? (6th level)
Many cells working together (ex. mussel tissue)
What is an organ? (7th level)
Tissues organized and working together (ex. heart)
What is an organ system? (8th level)
Organs that work together to perform certain functions (ex. circulatory system)
What is an organism? (9th level)
Organ systems working together (ex. Nathanle)
What is a population? (10th level)
All of a certain organism living in a certain area (ex. elk population)
What is a community? (11th level)
Different populations interacting (ex. forest community)
What is an ecosystem? (12th level)
A community with abiotic factors (Yellow Stone)
What is a biome? (13th level)
An ecosystem with similar climates (ex. a desert)
What is a biosphere? (14th level)
Wherever there is life/ worldwide sum of all ecosystems (ex. Earth)
What are biotic factors?
The living organisms/ factors in an ecosystem (ex. Nathanel)
What are abiotic factors?
The non-living factors in an ecosystem (ex. water)
What is a heterotroph?
Organisms that get their energy/food from other organisms
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
A food chain follows one path of energy while a food web is more complex and is a system of connected food chains
What are the names of each trophic level?
Producers (level 1), Primary consumers (level 2), Secondary consumers (level 3), Tertiary consumers (level 4) (Bonus: Apex predators- have no other predators)
What is the role of decomposers?
They break down dead organisms into nutrients for producers
How much energy is passed on from level to level?
10%
What are the three types of symbiotic relationships?
Parasitism +/-, Mutualism +/+, Commensalism +/0
What is parasitism?
One organism lives on or inside an organism causing the host harm while the parasite benefits
What is mutualism?
A relationship between two species where both benefit
