Popular Sovereignty
Authority of the people
Republic
the people rule through elected representatives who make laws & conduct government on behalf of the people.
Limited Government
powers of the government that are strictly defined(powers are given by the people)
Federalism
principle of shared power between the states and the national government
Expressed Powers
Powers that are strictly given to the national government (Ex:coin money, regulate trade)
Reserved Power
Powers that belong to the state (Ex:establish school’s, issue drivers licenses)
Concurred Powers
Powers that are shared between the states and the national government. (Ex:raise taxes, carry out criminal justice)
Separation of Powers
The Constitution separates the legislative executive and judicial powers of government by placing these powers in 3 different branches of government
Legislative Branch
Make laws (Congress)
Executive Branch
Carries out laws (President)
Judicial Branch
Determines if the laws are constitutional (Supreme Court)
Checks & Balances
Each branch of government can check or limit the power of other branches (helps keep a balance of power)
Individual Rights
Basic freedoms & liberties are guaranteed under the Bill of Rights
Implied Powers
Are not expressly stated in the Constitution
Necessary and Proper Clause
Part of Constitution that says Congress may make any law that is “necessary and proper” for carrying out it’s expressed powers
