printers Flashcards
(14 cards)
How does an inkjet printer work?
It sprays tiny droplets of ink directly onto the paper to form text and images.
Advantages of inkjet printers?
Good for high-quality photo printing
Relatively cheap to buy
Compact and lightweight
Disadvantages of inkjet printers?
Ink cartridges can be expensive
Slower printing speed compared to laser printers
Ink can smudge if not dried properly
How does a laser printer work?
It uses a laser beam to form an image on a drum, which attracts toner powder and transfers it onto paper, then heat-fuses the toner to the paper.
Advantages of laser printers?
Very fast printing, especially for large volumes
Produces sharp, high-quality text
Toner lasts longer and is more cost-effective over time
Disadvantages of laser printers?
High initial cost
Bulkier and heavier
Not as good as inkjets for photo-quality images
What is a 3D printer used for?
A 3D printer builds physical 3D objects from digital models by adding material layer by layer.
What is a dot matrix printer and where is it used?
An impact printer that strikes an inked ribbon to form characters. Used in places needing multi-part stationery (e.g., receipts, invoices).
Advantages of dot matrix printers?
Very durable
Can print on multi-layer forms
Low running costs
Disadvantages of dot matrix printers?
Noisy operation
Poor print quality compared to modern printers
Slow
Factors to consider when choosing a printer?
Purpose (photos, documents, industrial use)
Printing speed and volume
Print quality
Cost of ink/toner and maintenance
Size and portability
What is duplex printing?
Printing on both sides of a sheet of paper automatically.
What is printer resolution measured in?
DPI (Dots Per Inch) — the higher the DPI, the sharper the print.
