A
- both the Irish nationalists (redmond) and the ulster unionists (Carson) generally supported British involvement in the war.
- many from Ireland and ulster joined up to fight.
- some nationalists (south, wanted independence) believed participation was wrong, as it meant supporting the British.
- Irish volunteers ( under Eoin MacNeill) began plotting an uprising against the British presence in Ireland

Describe the events of Easter rising
A
- in 1917, 1000 armed rebels seized the General Post office in Dublin on Easter Monday.
- put up a declaration announcing that an Irish republic had been established
- failed to get widespread support
- British were able to defeat the Irish volunteers through their military strength, although there were battles and fights in streets for up to a week.

Aftermath and impact of Easter rising
A
- overall a failure for the Irish Volunteers- only had support of 1600
- even redmond and Catholic Church condemned it (despite anticipating their support)
- BUT, British treatment of rebels was seen to be too extreme and gained the IV support.
- British executed 15 leaders, over 3000 were arrested and many were sent to Britain w/o a trial.
- created a great hatred of British rule- prompting further calls for full independence.

A
- greater support for Sinn Fein in Ireland (now biggest party)
- seen as more revolutionary and campaigned for full independence
- less support for the Irish nationalists- who were seen as more moderate and in collaboration with the British.
