Problems With The Design Of Yerkes Flashcards
(6 cards)
Problem with the design
Culturally biased- assumed a level of knowledge of American culture to answer them
Some recruits had never even held a pen before
Problems with the administration
Many more illiterate recruits than expected, queues too big for beta
Some people ignored criteria and gave illiterate people alpha tests
More people had to retake tests
Problems with interpretation
Systematic biases which meant Europeans and black people did worse
Really measuring level of schooling and familiarity with US culture
Results of Yerkes findings
Used to lobby greater restrictions on people entering the country
Immigration restrictions act
Long term negative affects of Yerkes
6 million people barred from entering America between 1924 and 23
Jewish people tried to leave Europe in WW2 but were unable to do so due to restrictions
Biggest issue with design
Tests were culturally biased, they assumed a knowledge of American culture to be able to answer.
This meant recent immigration of people with different schooling would be a disadvantage
Some recruits had never held a pen
