What SAMPLE did Rahe et al use?
2664 men who were naval and marine personnel. The mean age was 22.3 and they came from a range of backgrounds (10% of the initial sample was lost due to transfer of men off the ships
What were the men on board of?
3 U.S. Navy cruisers (2 vietnam, 1 medditererrainian)
What were participants required to fill in?
The Schedule of Recent Experience (SRE)which is the military adaption of the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SSRS)
When/how often was the questionnaire filled out?
Every 6 months, 2 years prior to a 6-8 month deployment.
Describe the SRE
A pen and paper, self administered questionnaire documenting significant changes in a persons life. Relating to personal, social, economic, religious, family etc.
What/how were life changes measured on the SRRS?
Each life change is assigned a Life Change Unit (LCU) which reflected the amoutn of readjustment needed for that event.
When on board, all illnesses were recorded no matter how minor they were. However some were excluded. What type of ‘illness’ was excluded?
Sick room visits that were thought to be motivated by the desire to be excused from work (absenteeism)
What was the main dependent variable (DV) in the study
Amount of sick days.
When and by whom was the DV measured by?
When the ship returned, By a research physician (by checking health records of sailors)
